Why Go?

We are all in the flesh. We have these wonderful bodies that ache and hurt and get exhausted. We are abounding with responsibilities and cares in this world, that in the flesh, sometimes we all wonder various things like:

  • Why go to church today? It will probably be the same old message and I’ll talk to the same old people.
  • Why go to visitation and pass out tracts? Hardly anyone ever gets saved any more.
  • Why go and visit the shut-ins? They probably won’t remember my visit.
  • Why go into full-time service for the Lord? Most people don’t treat preachers and their families very nice anyway.
  • Why go and help clean the church? If I don’t go, someone else will do it. I won’t be missed.
  • Why teach a Sunday School class? I’m not making any impact on those children.
  • Why go and give out cards or notes of encouragement? No one really cares anyhow.
  • Why go…

Why do we go and do the things we do as Christians?

    1. We go because we should be demonstrating and showing our love to the Lord Jesus for his free gift of salvation.

Think – Jesus left all the glories of heaven to come and live on this earth for 33 years. I would not leave heaven to come to this earth for 33 years, walk around sinful men, be treated terribly, and die an agonizing death. Would you? Probably not. However, Jesus did leave heaven for us and the least we can do is leave the comforts of our home and go do something for him. We can clean the church. We can pass out tracts. We can do a multitude of things for Jesus to show our love for him. In 2021, or any new year, let’s show our love to Christ for what he did to give us eternal life.

Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
John 14:15 “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”

    1. We go because we want blessings and not cursings from God. “God doesn’t curse,” you may say. My reply, “Oh yes he does.” Read on.

Think – Children like to please their parents so their parents will do special things for them. We want to please our Heavenly Father so he will do exceptional things for us.

Malachi 3:10 “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.”
Psalm 1:1-3 “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly…But his delight is in the law of the Lord…and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

We don’t like to think on the negative, but there is an opposite of blessings – cursings. I truly had not thought of cursings until recently, then I studied Deborah the Judge in Judges 4-5. When theey departed for battle, I was amazed at the verse below. I had read it before, but it never sank in. This time it did. God actually cursed a group of people because they were not helpful to the cause of the battle like they should have been. Wow! This should make one think, “What if I don’t help in the area Christ wants me to in life?”

Judges 5:23 “Curse ye Meroz, said the angel of the Lord, curse ye bitterly the inhabitants thereof; because they came not to the help of the Lord, to the help of the Lord against the mighty.”

    1. We go because we should be allowing the Spirit to direct us and not our flesh. We should be pursuing after God’s control and guidance.

Think – A sailboat that has the sails down cannot control where it is going. It just floats around and goes in any direction the waves send it. But when the sails are put up, it is directed by the wind hitting the sails and the sailboat is directed where the captain steers it to go. In our life, we need the sails up. We need the Holy Spirit to direct us to go where he wants us to go.

Romans 8:5-9 “For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Next time you surmise and determine it isn’t important “To Go Do” whatever for God, remember these three Biblical truths:

  1. We go because we should be showing our love to the Lord Jesus for his free gift of salvation.
  2. We go because we want blessings and not cursings from God.
  3. We go because we should be allowing the Spirit to control us and not our flesh.

Trust God that he will give you the physical strength to accomplish his will for your life. Now get out there in 2021 and Go!

Psalm 28:8-9 “The Lord is their strength, and he is the saving strength of his anointed. 9 Save thy people, and bless thine inheritance: feed them also, and lift them up for ever.”
Psalm 29:11 “The Lord will give strength unto his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace.”

I was born in 1967 and I have been living in sunny Whakatane, New Zealand since Christmas 2010. My husband pastors a church and it has been a delight living in New Zealand. We both are originally from Maryland, USA. I have been amazed at the beautiful landscapes and stunning wildlife, especially the birds in New Zealand. Many of the native birds visit our modest yard on a daily basis. I was blessed at one time to have several aviaries with finches. In 2021, I had surgery to remove my appendix which was filled with cancer and then breast cancer surgery and radiation. It was an interesting year. Prior to my surgeries, my husband had two back surgeries. I'm glad God knows best even if I do not understand all he is doing. In 2022, for 6 months, I traveled to the US to put my youngest daughter into college in Arizona. People I met, during this trip, spiritually lifted me up in ways they will never understand. I'm glad God is in control of everything. Resting, gardening, and reading my Bible are cherished pastimes. It gets my mind off everything. We all need those places we can go and get our minds off everything. A place that is encouraging and comforting and at the same time give a little pricking of the heart to keep us trying our best to serve the Lord. I hope this Blog will be such a place for you. A place to find encouragement and comfort along with a few smiles.
